Nungambakkam just got a lovely new boulangerie and we can’t tell you how much we were looking forward to this one. Located in the same complex as the popular vegetarian Italian-Mexican restaurant, Quattro (that created quite a splash in the city foodie paradise a few months ago); this new café has a lengthy menu spanning across several pages. The Rolling Pin is your best bet for spending a leisurely Sunday coffee brunch with your family. It is also perfect place to catch up with friends on a weekday evening!

The patisserie will make you squeal with joy, the moment you enter the place. The dessert showcase has the widest range of cakes, pies, tarts, cheesecake and pastries that one can only imagine. The café is 100 % vegetarian and all their baked goodies are prepared sans eggs. Yes, you read that right!

A patisserie, chocolaterie and boulangerie combined with the menu of an all-day café, this establishment gives the look and feel of laid back, quirky cafes of Europe. The open planned kitchen gives you a great view of all the scrumptious creations being prepared live. The spacious seating area with simple but minimalistic interiors, smells of freshly baked goodies adds to the charm of this café. Modern yet old school, The Rolling Pin boasts of comfort and warmth.

Yes, these are edible !

The cafe has an all-vegetarian menu including everything from light bites to steaming sizzlers, woks to pizzas, sandwiches to wraps, signature house burgers to Asian delicacies and much more! The children’s menu includes fun dishes like mac n cheese, Nutella and peanut butter inspired creations which makes sure that you will be in your kid’s good books! There are also a lot of healthy options as seen in the juice blends and smoothies made using fresh fruit and vegetables.

On a Sunday noon, we went to The Rolling Pin and were welcomed to the fresh aroma of coffee and baked goodies. With the searing temperature outside, we opted for their Orange Iced Tea Goblet. With large orange rinds, tea infuser and served in an actual goblet, this was one refreshing drink perfect for the weather. If you love the idea of chocolate-y shakes, do try out their massive Freak Shakes. We tried their Hazelnut Nutella Freakshake and it was sinful and filling to the core. And if you are watching your weight, try their freshly blended cucumber, ginger and orange juice – it is a pure delight. Along with our beverages, we nibbled on Roasted Corn Wheels rubbed with peri peri masala and beetroot dust and Potato Wedges topped with chipotle sauce, sour cream and stir fried veggies. But the star from the light bites section was the Panko Crumbled Mushrooms stuffed with cheese. They were absolutely divine and were gobbled in a few seconds of being served.

Our main course comprised of their Club Sandwich, where the buttered slices of toasted bread were stacked with veggies, lettuce,  a cool tomato omelet and cheese. We also ordered their Double Cheese Veggie Burger where the melted cheddar cheese was on the top of the sesame bun and there were garden fresh veggies and potato patty in the centre – this one was quite an indulgence and a delicious one at that!

We also tried out their Asian fare including the creamy Thai Green Curry served with steamed rice. The Rolling Pin also has a lot of DIY options including salads and rice bowls. We actually quite liked their Stir Fried Black Rice Bowl with tonnes of veggies in hot garlic sauce (You can choose the rice variety, topping and sauce).

For desserts, we were spoilt for choice since they have a huge range in their bakery section. But we tried out the desserts from the café menu. The Cookie in a Cup and Blueberry Cheese Cake were rich, sinful and got our total thumbs-up. We finished the meal with the mildly fruity Strawberry Champagne Exotic Tea.
